Chocolate con Churros

I have been in Madrid for about six months.  Now, that seems like an incredible sentence in and of itself.  However, this next one is even crazier.  Tonight was the first time I have had chocolate con churros. Chocolate con churros is Spanish donuts with hot chocolate.  The chocolate is nothing like I’ve ever had before.  It’s not piping hot.  It’s dark, it's sweet, and it’s thick enough to eat with a spoon.  It's chocolate soup.

Likewise, churros are hardly donuts – take it from someone who has lived in the land of Dunkin Donuts – although they are certainly fried.  They are long and thin and taste a bit like a French Cruller, which just happens to be my favorite donut.  How convenient.

The way to eat chocolate con churros is to order a chocolate caliente, a plate of churros, and procede to dip the churros into the chocolate.

Like so:

The most famous place in Madrid to get this combo (for €3.50) is Chocolatería San Ginés.  It’s most popular between 3am and 6am, when Madrileños need just a little more sustenance to make it home after a night out.
